Welcome!
Columbia's Earth Day Festival will be
held on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Updated 4:30pm, April 24, 2010

Columbia Earth Day organizers regret to announce the postponement of the 2010 Earth Day Festival from its schedule date of April 25 to its planned rain date, Sunday, May 2.

“We have taken this decision based upon the amount of rain that has fallen already, the rain forecasted to fall overnight, and the likelihood of more rain still during the day tomorrow,” said Earth Day organizer Mark Haim. “The ground in the park is already very wet and, even if rain was to let up, we would be faced with a very wet park, unsuitable for a concert or kids’ activities. We also don’t want to damage Peace Park, and are conscious of the impact that thousands of people can have on very wet ground,” Haim continued.

The forecast calls for a chilly, blustery day with strong winds and temperatures staying mostly in the 50s. The Earth Day Coalition is hoping for better weather May 2 and regrets any inconvenience this decision causes. The Coalition is also seeking additional volunteers to take the place of those who’d planned to help tomorrow but will be unavailable on May 2. Those interested in volunteering should call 573-875-0539 or e-mail mail@columbiaearthday.org.

Join us for the Earth Day Street Fair!
12pm - 7pm in MU's Peace Park and adjacent streets

This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, held April 22, 1970. The Columbia Earth Day Coalition is encouraging all to come out to celebrate Forty Years Growing Green. There will be a huge street fair, two stages, activities from noon to 5 pm in Kids' Park, education and access to information throughout the day on Eco Avenue, and much more.

We could still use volunteers to help with the Festival. If you'd like to lend a hand, please contact Mark right away at 573-875-0539 or mail@midmopeaceworks.org.

E-CYCLING AT EARTH DAY: Our friends from the Missouri Computer Exchange will again be collecting electronics for refurbishing, reuse or recycling. Their booth, on the west side of 7th St. just north of Elm, will accept the following at no charge: Laptops, desktop PCs, scanners, computer components, mice, keyboards, printers, handheld electronics, cellular phones, video game players and consoles, PDAs, MP3 players, cameras, stereos, CD players and telephones. They will also take the following for a $5 fee: Computer monitors, copy machines, microwave ovens, televisions. Missouri Computer Exchange is non-profit and, unlike some e-cyclers, none of what they collect is shipped overseas and none of it is landfilled. To learn more about their operation please visit mocx.org.

THE WEATHER: We will do our best to hold the Festival as scheduled. Unless it turns out that rain looks 100% certain, or unless the park is just too wet to hold the event, we will try to hold off until the last minute on making a decision. Please don't call us to see if Earth Day has been postponed. If we find we need to postpone, we will notify all the media and update the website. 89.5 KOPN will definitely be announcing a postponement frequently, should we need to do this.
